Blogs I Commented On

https://reneeyes.blogspot.com/ I agree with all of the points you made. As a society, I think we do not focus on the real issues impacting the world. Although I do think that Notre Dame burning down is a tragedy, there will be experts hired and billions of dollars spent to ensure it is repaired. There are many other important issues that should be worked on first before billions of dollars are spent on repairing an 850-year-old cathedral. https://heydainyoon.blogspot.com/ I agree with you Dain. Nike has always used coloured people in their advertisements, not to turn a profit, but to have equal representation of all races. Nike took a huge risk in hiring Colin Kaepernick for their brand especially after the controversy surrounding his protest. Nike's well thought out and smart marketing strategy resulted in people talking about the issue Kaepernick stood up for. Thus, I also believe Nike's intentions were to make a statement and to raise awarenes...

Raptors Win Causes Uproar Across Canada and the U.S

Image
After a Game 6 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, the Toronto Raptors are headed to the NBA finals for the first time in franchise history, and fans couldn’t be more excited. The victory sent sports fans in Toronto and across Canada into a frenzy. On Twitter, the use of the We The North hashtag grew significantly compared to during the regular season. Even in the U.S, many states except for California, Nevada and Hawaii, which represent the core Golden State Warriors fans, are rooting for the Raptors to win the NBA finals.   There are also many companies in Toronto that have jumped on the Raptor’s bandwagon. From Netflix to GO-Transit, almost everywhere you look people are expressing their love and support for the team. On Thursday, McDonald’s Canada released an ad in which its golden arches were changed to white. “In support of the Raps, our arches are no longer in a golden state,” the company tweeted. Netflix Canada also tweeted: "That if you’re watching Netflix tonight...

Fake News is No News

Image
Fake news is everywhere—in magazines, articles, and social media.   It has become normal to question the information we receive every day because of the increase in fake news.   I see fake news everywhere, but mostly on Instagram, about celebrity drama and leaks about plots of movies.   However, most of these posts are fake and want to gain attention and publicity.   There are many different ways to determine if you are reading fake news.   An effective way that I have used while reading information on the internet is to check if the author is reliable or not.   Often times, the most controversial information is found on people’s blogs, twitter accounts, and personal websites where  people want to gain media attention.   Another way is to read the whole article to see if the headline matches the content of the article.   Many times, I have clicked on a website because it had an interesting title and found that the information I wa...

My Culture is NOT a Costume

Image
Halloween is an exciting time for people of all ages to dress up as a superhero or their favourite movie or television character.   However, with all of the many costumes available in Halloween stores, people still choose to dress up as a certain ‘culture.’   This is referred to as cultural appropriation-to remove all original context or meaning, in order to make oneself seem “edgy”, or to allow or encourage monetary profit.   This may occur in a variety of forms, but around Halloween, it involves wearing costumes that focus on cultural stereotypes.   I recently viewed a video by Teen Vogue about how cultural appropriation during Halloween affects people from different ethnicities.   They were explaining that the costumes were disrespectful and were inaccurate depictions of traditional outfits people wear.   Hopefully, most people do not pick costumes with the intention of being racist.   But regardless, appropriative costumes encourage cul...

Knock the Vote 2018

In November 2018, a midterm election in the United States took place.   The midterm elections are a way for US citizens to keep the President in check. It allows voters to change the makeup of Congress, though voting in more Democrats to prevent Republican law from being passed.   In this way, voters can prevent Trump from making any progress if enough people disagree with his end goals.  Based on the ‘Knock the Vote’ video, the majority of mid-term electorates are usually whiter, older and more conservative than voters from a presidential election.   The video featu red a variety of older men and women using profanity to anger youth.   They made comments disregarding climate change, school shootings and the ‘March for Lives’ movement.   Their defence for not caring about upcoming issues was that they will be dead, or that they haven’t been to school for 50 years.   The message of the video is reminding youth that rich, elderly Donald Trump suppor...

Nike Takes a Knee with Kaepernick

Image
In 2016, Colin Kaepernick took a stand against the racism occurring in America.  During the national anthem of an NFL game, he knelt on the sidelines to peacefully protest his views on racial injustice.  His actions left the country divided, some were in support of his protest, while others felt it was disrespectful towards the veterans that fought for their country.  Kaepernick was later fired from the San Francisco 49ers.  Recently, the company Nike responded to the uproar and hired Colin Kaepernick for their brand. He is now the face of Nike’s ad, where they promote believing in and sacrificing everything to accomplish your goals.   Nike’s decision to use Colin Kaepernick as the face of their latest campaign was met with both anger and celebration.   After the company released the ad, many angry sports fans retaliated by destroying Nike apparel.   Videos were posted on the internet of people burning their shoes and tearing...
